Groupe E’nergys’ Impulse at the heart of CONDAT’s project to reduce energy costs and decarbonize “full steam ahead”!

Benfeld and Le-Lardin-Saint-Lazare, April 30, 2024 – Dedicated to producing glassine (crystal paper) and single-sided coated paper for labels, the CONDAT facility, a subsidiary of the European LECTA Group, aimed to upgrade its steam production process starting in 2020. To ensure optimal operation of its specialty paper machine, the company sought to transition from natural gas to SRF (Solid Recovered Fuel) as a sustainable alternative. The project to replace the gas boiler with a dedicated SRF recovery boiler is expected to significantly reduce CONDAT’s carbon footprint and fossil energy costs, thereby boosting the competitiveness of its production. Amid volatile energy prices, particularly for gas, managing energy costs is a critical competitive advantage for CONDAT, a paper manufacturer heavily reliant on heat in its production processes. To complete this strategic project, the CONDAT paper mill enlisted the expertise of industrial energy specialist Impulse, part of the E’nergys Group, in March 2020. As prime contractor, Impulse is responsible for providing multi-technical support and overseeing project management for the SRF boiler installation. With a capacity of 32 MW and scheduled to be operational in autumn 2024, this new boiler, fueled by locally sourced high-grade biogenic waste, will meet 100% of CONDAT’s steam needs, while cutting gas consumption and reducing CO₂ emissions by over 13,000 tons annually!

Impulse leads this long-term project, bringing together a wide range of expertise and participants!

Selected in March 2020 by CONDAT, Impulse, an E’nergys group company, was in charge of general design, scheduling, management, coordination and performance of all work relating to the SRF boiler. “We chose Impulse, a regional partner, for their proven experience and technical expertise in managing this type of industrial project,” says Mathieu Introvigne, Energy Manager at Papeterie CONDAT. As the project manager, Impulse has been supporting the client, CONDAT, since 2020 in collaboration with Périgord Énergie, a subsidiary of ENGIE, which serves as the client’s advisor and future operator of the SRF boiler.

This large-scale project unfolded with several “highlights” led by multi-technical prime contractor Impulse. Following a thorough analysis of energy consumption and the advantages of an SRF boiler within the site’s production-consumption framework, Impulse delivered a Detailed Pre-Project in August 2020. This study defined the required dimensions and technologies, designed the overall SRF installation, allocated the work across 10 distinct packages, and anticipated the project’s needs and constraints. In late 2020, following the completion of process studies, Impulse – working closely with CONDAT – launched the first two work packages: Boiler & Flue Gas Treatment and Fuel Storage & Handling. The team also consulted with the companies responsible for carrying out the work. On completing the final project in September 2022, Impulse launched a call for tenders for the remaining key work packages: hydraulic systems, electricity, automation, and more, carefully selecting the most suitable companies for each. From February 2023 onwards, Impulse was in charge of managing the SRF boiler project – expert appraisals, participants and milestones, with final mechanical assembly scheduled for May 2024. Cold testing started in good time, with hot testing scheduled for summer 2024. The VALMET boiler, which will recover 64,000 tons of SRF per year, is scheduled to come on stream in mid-September 2024.

The €56 million SRF boiler project, funded with €45 million from Kyotherm and supported by a €14 million subsidy from ADEME, will empower CONDAT to reduce its reliance on natural gas, diversify its energy mix, and significantly lower energy costs, a major component of its operating expenses.” This project is 100% reversible to wood.

“The collaboration with the Impulse teams is excellent. They are the driving force behind the project, working closely with CONDAT to respond to changing constraints,” concludes Mathieu Introvigne, Energy Manager at Papeterie CONDAT.
