To further enhance energy efficiency, the Triumph Group’s logistics platform in Obernai is leveraging the expertise of Impulse, part of the E’nergys Group, whose audit, recommendations, and ongoing support are helping to activate new energy-saving levers by 2023. Its aim is to exceed the requirements of the Tertiary Decree and accelerate its energy transition!

Benfeld, March 27, 2023 – As Christophe Simler, Infrastructure Manager at Triumph Obernai, tells us: To comply with the Tertiary Decree’s target of a 40% reduction in energy consumption by 2030, the 55,000 m² Obernai logistics platform only needs to achieve an additional 3% in energy savings. As part of our commitment to implementing the “Éco Énergie Tertiaire” decree, we are focusing our efforts on optimizing our HVAC systems – heating, ventilation, and air conditioning – with the guidance and recommendations of Impulse.

Operating under strict regulatory requirements, from ICPE (Classified Installations for Environmental Protection) standards to mandatory energy audits every four years, Triumph’s main European logistics platform has been committed to reducing its energy consumption since 2008. This facility, which serves 22,000 customers across 28 countries and delivers over 25 million items annually, including the flagship Sloggi brand, has already implemented measures such as optimized lighting and mechanized process improvements. In line with the implementation of the “Éco Énergie Tertiaire” decree, Triumph’s logistics platform entrusted its 2022 Regulatory Energy Audit to Impulse, part of the E’nergys Group and a SOCOMEC Group company. As Triumph’s trusted partner for energy metering solutions since 2008, Impulse is now helping the platform to achieve even greater energy efficiency from 2023 onward.

Hunting down energy waste, a priority since 2008!

At Triumph’s Obernai logistics platform, innovation drives energy efficiency, particularly when it comes to the three biggest energy consumers: lighting, mechanized processes, and the HVAC system. In 2008, it completely redesigned its lighting system– over 6,500 light sources, replacing fluorescents with LEDs equipped with presence and motion detectors, adjusted to the best settings. The platform is equipped with SOCOMEC’s advanced energy measurement, monitoring, and quality systems, featuring a comprehensive sub-metering setup across 57 zones. This ensures a 360° view of energy consumption and enables the identification of high-energy-demand areas throughout the platform. With a presence rate of 1 to 10% in the warehouse aisles, the energy savings achieved are significant – over 36%! In 2021, the Triumph logistics platform, worked as an integrator with manufacturer Interoll on a pilot project to reduce the energy consumption of the existing conveyor. This modernization, which involved changing motors and drive rollers, reduced energy consumption by approximately 50% for almost all sections of its 7-kilometer conveyor!

In response to the first deadline of the “Éco Énergie Tertiaire” decree, the logistics platform is seeking a partner to assist with the OPERAT declaration and provide optimization solutions for another key energy consumer: its HVAC system, including air conditioning, ventilation, and heating. Thanks to its pool of energy skills and its approach, Impulse by Groupe E’nergys quickly made the difference. Christophe Simler explains the benefits of Impulse: “Impulse stands apart because it provides long-term support, between different milestones, to help us achieve our sobriety objectives. This is further enhanced by its audit methodology, which covers everything from on-site surveys and data analysis to actionable recommendations, and, most importantly, worksheets that can be automatically updated. This guarantees that we rapidly benefit from an action plan as part of an energy-saving master plan, without wasting time or making major investments.

The huge energy-saving potential of HVAC!

Following the regulatory Energy Audit, Impulse identified approximately ten potential areas for improvement at Triumph’s logistics platform, primarily focusing on HVAC equipment, to help reduce energy consumption. In its recommendations, Impulse favors actions with a rapid ROI based on the most relevant time and investment factors. Examples include optimizing the settings of existing heating and cooling equipment, addressing compressed air waste, where over 30% of leaks were observed, and reducing pressure by one bar to achieve greater energy savings. Other suggestions include switching to a new generation of rooftop heat pumps, which offer superior energy efficiency (producing 3.5 kWh for every 1 kWh consumed), optimizing CBMS settings – especially for time programming – and replacing the current air handling unit (AHU) motor, which is highly energy-intensive in its current configuration.

Christophe Simler concludes: “If we follow Impulse’s recommendations in their entirety, we can significantly reduce our post-HVAC energy consumption, saving 134,000 euros, which is far from negligible. We have already built a strong working relationship with Impulse, having experienced firsthand the excellence of their expertise and the dedication of their team through their comprehensive audit.”

In the coming years, Triumph’s logistics platform plans to redesign its water consumption systems and building management infrastructure, while continuing to install photovoltaic panels to further increase the share of self-consumed energy.
